I think the names also alternate in gender, or at least they try to...

yes I think it's each year it changes gender. Originally it was only female names but one of the women's rights activists groups or other petitioned to add male names like 20-30 years or so ago. Since then the gender alternates with the year I think. And they do retire the names that end up as really bad damage hurricanes, like Ivan and now Katrina. This was I believe only the second time they've run into the Greek alphabet since the naming system started back just after WWI.
Some WWI radio guy or other started the naming idea, giving some bad hurricane or other a female nickname during the war, and the idea stuck and became official.

We dont often get cyclones or the such here so we just name them from A-Z until Z comes then we start again ulternating gender with each name. Where i live they're even rarer.

Well the names have already been desided, and are repeated every 5 years. So the ones from last year we will hear again in 2010 then in 2015.

We're lucky here on our island. We have no hurricanes just windy days caused by bid winds drifting over the atlantic ^^
